MONTREAL — Metro Inc. appears to be closer to ending a strike at its Laval, Que., produce distribution centre, after reaching an agreement in principle with the union for the renewal of the collective contract.

Metro says the union’s bargaining committee will unanimously recommend that workers vote for it.

A ratification vote will be held on Sept. 24.

About 550 unionized workers at the distribution centre, including those in transportation and at the head office, have been on strike since March 30, demanding better pay and working conditions.

Negotiations came to a standstill in the summer as the company and United Grocers Workers Union Metro-Richelieu (CSN), which represents distribution centre workers, stood far apart on terms.

Nicolas Amyot, Metro’s chief financial officer, has previously estimated the strike cost the company $90 million in lost profit and direct costs in the third quarter.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 17, 2026.
