S&P/TSX composite down nearly 200 points, U.S. stock markets also lower

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down nearly 200 points in late-morning trading amid broad-based weakness on the Toronto market, while U.S. stock markets also fell.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 196.42 points at 35,677.84.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 207.16 points at 51,570.88. The S&P 500 index was down 8.79 points at 7,628.97, while the Nasdaq composite was down 11.95 points at 26,406.35.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.38 cents US compared with 71.49 cents US on Thursday.

The November crude oil contract was down 30 cents US at US$96.93 per barrel.

The December gold contract was down US$10.10 at US$4,389.60 an ounce.
